失去方向的兩人只能依靠一些小巧思來求生存，例如天冷時他們會躲在翻過來的冰櫃裡依偎，還得不時爬出冰櫃，將滲進船隻的海水撈出去。荷西甚至學會像《少年Pi的奇幻漂流》那樣徒手抓魚生吃，連鳥和烏龜都成了他們的食物。小編實在不敢想像生吃上列動物的口感…

很不幸，荷西的夥伴在漂流第4個月時去世，據說他死前生吃了海鳥肉之後感到極度不適，結果一覺不醒。荷西繼續漂流，最後被發現時是在距離出海點12000公里的一座小島上，情節簡直宛如《少年Pi的奇幻漂流》翻版…

荷西無法接受夥伴已走的事實，就算朋友已經過世多時，他還會不斷對屍體說話，例如：「你睡得好嗎？」、「你吃早餐沒？」看來電影《浩劫重生》裡的劇情一點都不會太誇張呢。

荷西難過不捨之下，最後還是將夥伴Cordoba的屍體拋進大海，並表示相當自責，畢竟當初是他邀請Cordoba出海捕魚。自從獲救以來，荷西陸續接受了來自全球新聞媒體多達40則訪問，細數他的「荷西漂流記」。
